Ever since Colin started eating solid food, he has despised meat. The kid will not even eat chicken nuggets! Planning our dinner menu has turned in to a struggle because all we really have time to cook is to bake or grill some type of meat and throw a bag of frozen veggies in the microwave. Since Colin won't eat meat, he usually ends up just picking through his veggies so we give in and give him some Cheerios or something more filling.
I've grown tired of this routine so I turned to the Internet to get some ideas of actual meals that are made with mainly vegetables. I stumbled upon www.chooseveg.com and was absolutely appalled at the information it provided about how animals are treated. Warning: there are graphic videos and pictures.
Now, I did know the animals aren't treated like pets but I didn't know they are beaten, burned and tortured. I watched roughly 3 seconds of the hog video and was done. DONE. I can't be a part of that. I'm aware I can't single handedly stop the abuse, but I have a choice of whether to stand for it or not. And I choose not to.
I have mostly kept the decision to myself, only telling those who are either A) directly impacted or B) supportive. (please be supportive, k?).
The change has been a process for me. I've stopped eating meat and eggs but I still eat dairy products. I hope to slowly transition that out as well. I mean, I didn't eat any type of dairy for nearly 6 months while I was on Weight Watcher's so I can do it again, right!?
I'm nearing a week of being meat-free and I must say, I'm feeling pretty damn good! I feel lighter, less bloated. Generally just healthier. I can't say I won't ever meat again. But if I do, I want to be sure I know the source and that the animals were treated humanely.
Who knows if that will ever happen but it's a possibility!
